Kakolanmäki: A Guide to the Chic Hotel, Spa, Restaurants & Shops

April 2024

Jump to: Turku Travel Guide

Turku's Kakolanmäki has undergone a fascinating makeover! This historic hill, once a prison site, is now a vibrant hub brimming with unique experiences. Explore the chic Kakola Hotel or unwind at the luxurious spa. Foodies can tantalize their taste buds at Restaurant Ruben, known for its innovative meatless dishes, or browse handcrafted goods made by former prisoners at the Kakola Shop. Whether you're seeking trendy cafes, fresh-baked treats, or craft beers, Kakolanmäki offers a delightful blend of history and modern charm.

Kakola Spa

Kakola Spa in Turku offers a unique spa experience in a historic prison setting. Here's a heads-up based on my recent visit (April 2024):

Pool Options: If you're looking for a variety of hot springs like Japanese onsens, Kakola Spa might not be the best fit. There's only one lukewarm pool designed for six people, so be prepared for potential waits. It is not hot at all or not as hot as expected, especially for those accustomed to Japanese onsen experiences. They have one large (cold) pool, a "salt" pool (also cold, and you might not feel a strong difference that it is saltwater), and a small, very cold pool.
Saunas: Three saunas were available during my visit.
Amenities: Be prepared to bring your own toiletries as they only offer shampoo and conditioner. There are only two hair dryers for all women's changing areas, so consider bringing your own if drying speed is important.
Refreshments: While drinks are available, expect them to be on the pricier side. Water also costs extra.
Details to Consider: Towel space is limited, so avoid hanging yours with others and be mindful of where you place it (I once saw an old man use my towel). Towels cannot be placed on poolside chairs.

Overall Impression: While the historical setting offers a unique charm, the value might not be ideal, and the spa itself is on the smaller side. My visit cost €25 (special promotion in April), and I would have been more disappointed at the regular price of €39. Hotel Kakola guests receive a discounted rate of €20 (be aware spa access is not free with accommodation). However, if you're looking for a relaxing escape with a local twist, Kakola Spa could be worth considering.

Restaurant Ruben

We stumbled upon Restaurant Ruben (Ravintola Ruben) in Turku's Kakolanmäki district, and it was a win-win! They have a menu with vegetarian options alongside regular meat dishes. We tried their Thursday lunch for €11.90 - pea soup (they even have a veggie option, how cool is that?) and the most buttery Finnish pancakes ever. My husband enjoyed their lentil patties, and the staff were super friendly the whole time. I wouldn't call it fancy, but Restaurant Ruben has a certain quiet sophistication. Definitely recommend this place!

Hotel Kakola

Turku's Kakola Hotel offers a unique juxtaposition of modern luxury and historic charm. Intriguing displays throughout the hotel hint at its past as a prison, sparking your imagination. Step inside the inviting cafe for a quiet escape, or enjoy a delicious meal at Restaurant Ruben, conveniently located within the hotel. Be aware, though, that stays can be pricey, averaging around 180€ in April and potentially higher during other months.

Kakola Shop

Turku's Kakola Shop, also known as Kakolan myymälä, offers a chance to support a great cause while finding unique souvenirs. Browse handcrafted items made by prisoners from Turku Prison, fostering valuable skills and a path to reintegration. From charming wooden games (like the €12 one we found!) to cozy towels and textiles, there's something for everyone. The friendly staff even explained the game to us – a testament to Finnish hospitality!

Kakola Brewing Company Oy (brewery)

This brewery opens its doors at 4pm daily, inviting you to unwind and savor their selection of unique brews. Nestled amongst the area's historic charm, Kakola Brewing Company offers a perfect spot to relax with a pint and experience the exciting craft beer scene in Turku.

bageri Å (bakery)

Craving fresh-baked goodness? Look no further than Bagery Å in Turku's Kakolanmäki! Large glass windows invite you to watch the bakers work their magic, creating an atmosphere that's both delightful and cozy. While you're there, grab a bottle of their 6€ homemade sima drink (a Finnish spring beverage) and a pastry for a delightful and authentic Finnish treat.

Kakolanruusu

Turku's Kakolanruusu (also known as Ravintola Kakolanruusu) offers an elegant fine-dining experience within the historic Kakolanmäki district. While pricier than Restaurant Ruben, Kakolanruusu offers a tempting alternative with their special Friday lunches (around €42 per person). Immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of this former prison turned culinary haven, and savor the exquisite creations by their skilled chefs.

Paid parking is available for €2.50 per hour.
